Abstract:  Geographical characteristics of second home tourism in Slovenia – a regional overview

Residing in second homes is one of the most popular forms of recreation in Slovenia’s wide range of leisure activities. The first geographical studies on the topic of second homes were conducted in the late 1960s, with many published also in the 1980s and over the last decade, making this phenomenon one of the longest continuing research fields within geography in Slovenia. Despite the fact that the locations of second homes are generally dispersed, as they can be found in every municipality in the country, there are notable differences between the Alpine, Dinaric, Pannonian and Mediterranean regions of Slovenia. The paper examines the geographical characteristics of second home tourism in Slovenia and observes this phenomenon according to the mentioned regional types.

Abstract:  Changes in land use/land cover in the Sarajevo valley from 2000 to 2018 – CLC based analysis

Land cover changes primarily result from urbanization and city expansion. Cities are dynamic structures that constantly change, develop and expand from year to year, and these processes are driven by a number of economic, technological, political and cultural factors. In order to better investigate and predict the current and future changes in land use, remote sensing data is used. Corine Land Cover (CLC) is leading the way in this sense, and so far, a total of 5 data sets have been collected since 1990. This paper focuses on the Sarajevo valley, a highly urbanized area in the Sarajevo Canton, as a case study that is used in this paper in order to analyze the changes that have occurred over the last 18 years and determine the degree of urbanization and expansion of the city agglomeration. According to the CLC coverage type, the Sarajevo basin encompasses 16 of 44 coverage classes, and a considerable number of changes occurred during the analyzed period, notably the expansion of unconnected urban areas at the expense of agricultural areas. The analysis was done in a timely manner, taking into account all relevant data in order to identify changes in the way the land is used and to single out the „hot spots“ where these changes are most evident.

Abstract:  Emigrations from the territory of the Former Yugoslavia as a segment of global migration trends

In the 21st century, the Balkan Peninsula is one of the areas in Europe experiencing global population flows. Although these population flows were well-known during prehistory, this historical trend still continues, nowadays with migrants mostly from Asia and Africa primarily using the Balkan Peninsula as a transit route to other destinations. Due to the extremely weakened economy following the war events in the area of the former Yugoslavia, the population of the new states seeks intensely some safer and more economically stable places in Europe and overseas. This has led to the establishment of a significant diaspora. The paper utilises the data obtained from the state statistical services of a number of European and non-European countries that have such data available about the foreigners residing in their territories. This paper also employs various analysis, synthesis, and comparative methods, along with the cartographic methods that were used for purposes of adequate visual presentation.

Abstract: The influence of contemporary demographic processes on the education sector in Central Bosnia Canton

This paper focuses on the influence of contemporary demographic phenomena and processes on education demographics, exploring the challenges they present for the development of the education sector. The analysis explores the impact that the contemporary demographic processes like depopulation and its spatial aspects, natural change, and migration processes have on primary education in the Central Bosnia Canton. Notably, the paper highlights a significant disparity between the number of students entering (first grade) and leaving (upon completing) primary education. In recent years, the number of students completing primary education has been, on average, by 23-26% higher than the number of those enrolling the first grade. Projections based on modern birth rates and current trends indicate the potential emergence of an ever decreasing number of students in primary schools in the near future. To gauge perceptions of the most important causes of contemporary demographic processes and their influence on the development of primary education, we have conducted a survey on a sample involving 500 respondents. This study also explores the attitudes of younger residents of the Central Bosnia Canton towards the decision to have or not have children.

Abstract: Tourism as a factor in demographic development trends in Bosnia and Herzegovina – the case of Neum and Jahorina

Despite the extremely unfavorable demographic development of Bosnia and Herzegovina over the last thirty years, the tourism sector has exhibited notable positive trends. This study aims at exploring whether tourism, particularly at the local level, positively influences the demographic development of the country and serves as a tool for more successful demographic, economic, and overall spatial development. Neum, the only coastal tourist resort in the country, and Jahorina, one of the leading ski tourist resorts, have been selected as representative case studies. The objective of the study is to analyse the impact of tourism on the demographic development of Neum and Jahorina from the beginnings of mass tourism until today, with a specific focus on the most recent period. Data on tourist flow, employment in tourism and the number and age structure of the population have been analysed in relation to key socio-economic processes that have influenced both tourism and demographic development.

Abstract: Geospatial Analysis of Sarajevo's Tourism Planning: Unveiling Contemporary Trends and Features

This study critically examines the pivotal role of tourism planning in Sarajevo's economic development, emphasizing the challenges that arise from the failure to implement the tourism plans, which is attributed to various political shifts, evolving tourism market trends, and a number of contextual factors. The research employs a mixed-methods approach to the exploration of the current tourism situation in Sarajevo. A geospatial analysis that was made to explore the tourism plaining in this city reveals its strengths and weaknesses, including tax evasion and inconsistent categorization of tourism facilities. Recommendations center on collaborative efforts among authorities, legal entities, and stakeholders. The study deals with infrastructure dynamics, highlighting the dominance of hotels and the pronounced role of international tourists. Conclusively, the research advocates for a sustainable and interdisciplinary approach to tourism planning aligned with broader development plans, emphasizing the balance among visitors, residents, and the tourism sector in order to safeguard and improve Sarajevo's tourism potentials.

Abstract: The third demographic transition and migration in the regions of Belarus

The article examines the dynamics of population in the regions of Belarus, focusing on the influence of natural and migration population growth during the third demographic transition. The article provides a typology of the country’s regions based on some key factors determining the population dynamics. It is concluded that migration processes exert the most significant impact on the population dynamics of most regions in modern Belarus, signifying the occurrence of the third demographic transition in this country. Interestingly, internal migration processes are identified as the primary driver, rather than external factors. The study emphasizes the importance of examining the migration processes at the regional level for optimizing regional policy.
